Featured Artist: Ricardo Sousa
After our first international artist from India, Girinath Gopinath, our second international artist hails from Lisbon, Portugal and
his name's Ricardo Sousa. Believe it or not, he's only 17. A senior in high school, Ricardo draws his inspiration from all over.
Everything from urban art, street art, and comic books to graphic design, movies and music gets tapped and poured into
his black and white illustrations. Around school and in the art forums that he's part of, he's known for his intensely
complicated pieces that are highly detailed.
Ricardo wasn't always this way though. He used to think that compared to other artists, he wasn't that good. He felt that other artists had much more talent than he did, and he would never be able to draw like them. As he got older, and practiced more,
he came to realize that many of the artists that he knew and admired used computers to make their work.
From that day, he vowed to never use a computer to create his illustrations.
Every piece that he's created is done by hand. Every solid black area is hand painted. Every line is hand drawn. The homemade touch adds a tremendous amount to his works, and often people don't believe that such an intricate design is done away from
the computer. In a world dominated by computer art and creations, hand created works are becoming fewer and fewer. This
means that this technique gives his work that extra special kick.
